About Us: What is AAMH?
“Where Hope Begins”.
AAMH was founded in 1974 by parents of developmentally disabled adults, most of who were living under adverse quality of life conditions. They sought to create an organization that would provide social care and rehabilitative services for their children that would allow them to live in the community with dignity and respect.
In the late 70's, as the state of New Jersey was looking to de-institutionalize its treatment of the mentally ill, AAMH expanded its mission to include this needy population. Throughout the 80's available funding and the growth of the mentally ill population spurred AAMH to continue to expand its services to this population.
Today, after 30 years of service, AAMH has evolved into a
comprehensive, community behavioral and mental health center. In
addition to the rehabilitation services for the mentally ill, an
extensive outpatient psychiatric, psychotherapeutic and
counseling service treats individuals, couples, and families
coping with behavioral and emotional issues. Each year over
1,000 clients depend on the continuum of care the agency provides. Each one of them receives the services they need tailored to fit their individual goals regardless of their ability to pay. They rely on AAMH to assist them in coping with life's challenges, and just as our founders wanted for their children over 30 years ago, enabling them to live life to their fullest abilities with hope, dignity, and respect.
